Mount Terror is used as a location in the 2004 novel State of Fear by Michael Crichton.Mount Terror and Mount Erebus are mentioned in the 1936 novella At the Mountains of Madness by H.P.Mount Terror is the stronghold of Russian anarchist revolutionaries in the 1894 science fiction novel Olga Romanoff by George Griffith.Heine of the New Zealand Geological Survey Antarctic Expedition (NZGSAE), 1962–63, because of its association with Mount Terror. Terror Glacier ( 77☃7′S 168☃′E / 77.617°S 168.050☎ / -77.617 168.050) is a large glacier between Mount Terra Nova and Mount Terror on Ross Island, flowing south into Windless Bight. Named in association with Mount Terror, which rises to 3262 m to the east of this saddle. Terror Saddle ( 77☃1′S 168★′E / 77.517°S 168.083☎ / -77.517 168.083) is one of three prominent snow saddles on Ross Island, located c.1600 m between Mount Terra Nova and Mount Terror. Terror which overlooks this point from the northeast. The name was first used by members of the British National Antarctic Expedition, 1901–04, and was apparently applied in association with Mt. Terror, is the eastern limit of Fog Bay, 6 km (3.7 mi) WNW of Cape MacKay on Ross Island. Terror was made by a New Zealand party in 1959. The rocks at the summit have not been studied, but rocks from the lower areas range from 0.82 to 1.75 million years old, and Mount Terror shows no signs of more recent volcanic activity. The captain of Terror was Francis Crozier, a close friend of Ross for whom the nearby Cape Crozier is named. Mount Terror was named in 1841 by Sir James Clark Ross for his second ship, HMS Terror. It is the second largest of the four volcanoes that make up Ross Island and is somewhat overshadowed by its neighbour, Mount Erebus, 30 km (19 mi) to the west. It has numerous cinder cones and domes on the flanks of the shield and is mostly under snow and ice. The fact that the volcano is composed of layers of lava and ash erupted mainly from the summit means that it does erupt in a bigger way, it is just that no humans have seen it happen. The lava lake in the summit crater counts as an ongoing eruption but it is not a particularly active eruption. From September to December 1984, larger Strombolian eruptions occurred more frequently, ejecting bombs up to 2 km from the crater and sending small eruption columns to over 2 km high.,” Small Strombolian eruptions occur on a daily basis…often ejecting anorthoclase phonolite bombs onto the crater rim. Erebus volcanic province, PR Kyle writes “Mt Erebus is an active volcano…and contains a persistent convecting lava lake of anorthoclase phonolite magma. The most famous continental rift is the E. The tectonics around Erebus are not too clearly understood, but as summarized by Tom Simkin and Lee Seibert in “Volcanoes of the World”, there is a large continental rift that is cutting through the W part of Antarctica (I guess it is this splitting-apart that has formed the Ross Sea). Helens are called dacite because they contain about 64 weight percent silica, much more than the other two volcanoes. However, Mount Erebus rocks have greater amounts of alkali elements (sodium and potassium), about 9-10 weight percent compared to the 3 weight percent for rocks from Kilauea. The silica content of lava from Kilauea and Mount Erebus are about 50 weight percent. The composition of the volcanic products at each volcano is different. Eruptive activity at Mount Erebus tends to be strombolian, a little more explosive than Kilauea but far less than Mount St. Unlike Kilauea, Mount Erebus is a stratovolcano, the same type of volcano as Mount St. Like Kilauea current eruption, the vent was a lava lake that produced some lava flows. Helens but also has some significant differences. It shares some similarities with both Kilauea and Mount St. The most recent eruption of Mount Erebus began in 1972 and stopped in 1992.
